Book review
Title: Sense and sensibility.
Author: Jane Austen 1775-1817, the book is written in 1811.
Main characters: The main characters are the two sisters Elinor and Marianne.
Their mother, their neighbor Brandon and Willoughby also plays a big role.
Elinor is the oldest sister. She’s clever and sensible, and she’s very mature.
Marianne is only 16 years old, she dreams of love and finding the perfect man.
She is naive, and she doesn’t care what people around her think of her love life.
The mother is very kind, and she’s very similar to Marianne. The mother’s romantic
and she sees only the good in people.
Brandon’s a man in his best years ( around 40), and he’s very quiet and despite his age he‘s quite handsome .
He’s a old rich war hero, so he’s very respected by people.
Willoughby’s a young good looking man, he’s very charming and confident.
He doesn’t have a lot of money, but he will inherit a large sum of money by a relative.
I don’t know if a can identify myself with one of the main characters, but I think I’m a lot like Elinor. She’s mature and she’s not very romantic, and she gets irritated on her mother and sister.
Main plot: The Dashwood sisters have a brother, they don’t have the same mother but they have the same father. When the father died, all the money went to the brother.
In England at that time, only men could inherit.
The brother promises his father to help the sisters with money, but the brother has a very mean and needle wife. She thinks it’s cruel to take money from them to help his sisters, of course she wants the money for her self but to her husband she complains about them taking the heritage away from their own child.
Her husband is stupid, and in the end they make a decision. The Dashwood family shall move, because the house they live in is no longer theirs.
The brother gives them a small amount of money, but not nearly enough to contain the same standard as before.
The Dashwoods doesn’t have enough money to buy a house, but the cousin of the mother gives them a house on the country.
The house is small and cold, and it’s a big difference from the big glamorous house that they lived in before.
They are forced to dismiss almost all the servants, and they can’t no longer buy fancy clothes or food.
The cousin of the mother is a happy and funny man, and he often invites them to dinner and parties. One day, the Dashwoods meets Brandon. Brandon immediately falls in love with Marianne, but she doesn’t love him back. She finds him boring and old, instead she falls in love with Willoughby. He’s young, courageous and funny.
Brandon is jealous, but he’s old enough to realize that she’s young and he’s willing to wait for her.
Meanwhile, Elinor got love problems of her own. She is in love with Edward Ferras, he’s one of the two brothers of Elinors brothers wife. The brothers wife knows that Elinor an Edward is on love, but she thinks it’s a bad marriage for her brother, so she tries to sabotage their relation by forcing him to move to London.
Elinor is very unhappy, and she loves Edward very much.
The story is all about love and marriage, they are forced to choose between love and money. Willoughby is later on in the story forced to leave Marianne, otherwise he will not inherit anything.
Elinor also founds out that Edward is engaged with her friend Lucy. And later on she’s told that Mr Ferrars and Lucy Steal got married.
One day, Edward shows up at their home , and he tells her that they have broken up, and she is now married to his brother. He got engaged with her, when he was very young, and now he loves Elinor.
Marianne doesn’t know why Willougbhy left her, and for months she cries.
When she later on finds out why he left her, she can finally move on.
In the end, Marianne falls in love with Brandon and they get married, just like Edward and Elinor.
I liked the whole book, I don’t think any part was bad.
I really liked the book, even though it is 200 years old I think it is rather up-to-date.
People still have the same problems and feelings.
The characters are interesting and they feel very natural.
I like her way of writing, she’s very ironic and she’s quite funny.
She has a sharp eye for peoples characters and she can be quite mean, for example Austens description of the brothers wife.
I would recommend the book to people who like love and historical stories.
Despite what you may think, the book is quite easy to read.
Anyone can read it, both young and old.
The book pictures the life at that time, so it’s very interesting to read.
The book shows what it was like to live as a woman at that time, if you belonged to the high society. You couldn’t work or make your own money, you had to inherit or marry to get security.
